The past year or so we've had this economic downturn, the Great Recession, or whatever you want to call it, has been sort of odd for me. My business is still doing relatively well, but the unemployment rate is hitting 10%. People are having to take unpaid days off work, but my customers are still paying me (and paying on-time). In a way, there is a bit of guilt; but stronger than that is a deep feeling of gratitude.
The Jesuits have this practice called the Examen of Consciousness – a daily prayer of reflection on the day, with a focus on gratitude. It's a great practice, to look over your day and see where you've fallen short, where you've seen and experienced God's grace, and to identify those things you are grateful for. Even during my worst days, there is something to be grateful for.
